Controlling Insulin Levels
Saturday, 29 September 2007
Control of the insulin levels produced naturally within the body is the key to a lean, muscular physique. A recent study has confirmed that a stone-age (Paleolithic) diet dramatically improved insulin function in people with type-2 diabetes.
Secreted by the pancreas in response to meals, insulin drives carbohydrates, amino acids and other nutrients into muscle cells. For bodybuilders, the key is to have insulin-sensitive tissues so that only small amounts are produced. This enables body fat to be utilized (burnt) for fuel at the same time.
Unfortunately, type-2 (adult on-set) diabeties is a disease that affects nearly 50% of the adult US population. It’s a condition were the pancreas simply “wears out” and is unable to secrete enough insulin. This is a self-inflicted condition that develops from poor eating habits, no exercise and not enough sleep. It is a premature death sentence.
However, this condition can be avoided easily with the right approach to diet and exercise. Research from Lund University in Sweden has showed that type-2 diabetes can be reduced and even reversed with a Paleolithic approach to eating.
A Paleolithic diet is a representation of what our ancestors ate before humans became industrialized. Interestingly, this way of eating actually resembles the bodybuilding diet remarkably. That is, it’s a diet that’s high in protein, vegetables and fruits and rich in omega-3 (good) fats, while also being low in sugar and other refined carbohydrates.
A Paleolithic approach to eating improves insulin function. This enables the athlete to build a leaner, more muscular and healthier physique.
