Finding the Right Gym

Choosing a fitness club can be a difficult task. Today’s gyms are more than just places to work up a quick sweat. For some, they’re investments in a healthy lifestyle, while for others, they are social clubs to meet attractive women. Apart from working out, men generally like to hang around gyms to talk about sports, women and the latest headlines.

Many criteria should be analyzed when choosing a quality fitness club fitted to your individual needs. Four factors to guide your decision are discussed below and the remaining five are outlined in Finding The Right Gym - Part II. Hopefully, they will help you see beyond fancy high-tech equipment and impressive displays of sweaty bodies when picking a facility.

Location

Location is crucial to ensure regularity and consistency in workouts. If possible, join a club within walking distance from work or a short drive from home. A simple tip to trigger your guilty conscience is to select a gym that you pass by every day. This will remind you to lace up your sneakers and start sweating it out. Prime locations will save you time and provide you with extra motivation to hit the gym regularly.

Staff

The best way to judge whether a fitness club is adequate is to ask about the qualifications of its personal trainers. Trainers with huge muscles aren’t necessarily qualified for the task and fancy fitness certifications can be purchased from popular magazines. Ask basic questions about the instructors’ certifications and educational backgrounds. You can also ask other clients what they think of the gym and the trainers. It is one thing for the instructors to be fitness experts, but they should also be available without always expecting compensation for their advice.

The gym’s hours and the people who go there are also crucial factors…

Hours

Make sure the gym’s hours coincide with your availability. People who like to train before work might find that some services are restricted early in the morning, whereas those who prefer to train at the end of their workday might have to contend with long waits for the use of popular equipment. A simple tip is to visit the club at the time of day you expect to work out. Take notice of how long people wait for the weights and cardio equipment you expect to use. For some, this might even be a helpful experience to schedule effective training periods and avoid hectic peak times.

People

Every club caters to a certain type of clientele, so make sure you feel comfortable with the members. Obviously, if they are all extremely buff gym rats, you might feel uncomfortable working out in such an environment. In general, people feel comfortable training beside men and women of similar ages and interests. Therefore, get a feel for who you will be sharing the workout space with by visiting the gym at hours during which you will be training.

Have a great day and God bless!
